This is Corinne Johnson who just celebrated her 98th birthday (a day early by the way)—just as smart as she’s always been! Corinne and her late husband “Shorty” Johnson have been friends with my parents my entire life and played a support role for me as I tried to find my way as a teenager. Whether it was hanging out to talk Ole Miss football or borrowing a gun to hunt, I was known to spend time at the Johnson’s house.
I called Corinne last Sunday morning which was her 98th birthday. Born in 1919 really seems to put it in perspective for me. She answered the phone with that cheery voice and an energy level that makes you think a 30-year-old has just answered the phone. It was in this conversation that Corinne shared wisdom and insights with me that just felt compelled to pass on.
“Joey, I don’t feel old. 98 years old today, but I don’t feel old. I don’t even think about being old. I don’t worry about it, it is what it is. I try to enjoy today!”
Amazing mindset! I will not try to expound on those insights but I have certainly written them down for my personal reflection.
As we prepared to hang up, I reminded her that she promised to dance with me on her 99th birthday (this was when she had just turned 90). She laughed and said, “Joey, I’m looking forward to it!” What a blessing she has been in my life and I can’t wait to have that dance next year.
Have a blessed day, and a happy and joyful Thanksgiving!
