Magnetic Leadership = Respect, Appreciation and Recognition

I love this picture of Xander Schauffele hugging his caddie and longtime friend Austin Kaiser. This demonstrates what magnetic leadership is all about. 

Schauffele had just closed the final round of the British Open with a 6-under 65. It matched the best score of the week at Royal Troon with nothing less than the Claret Jug riding on the outcome.

He played bogey-free in a daunting wind as he faced incredible competitors also playing at a high level. He overcame the competition, wind, and nerves to come from behind for a two-shot victory for his second major of the year. This round of golf will rank among the most remarkable in British Open history and all three major golf tournaments. 

The funniest comment in the interview after winning was this from Xander. Standing on the 18th tee, Schauffele said he turned to his caddie Austin and told him he had felt calm down the decisive back nine.

“He said he was about to puke,” said Schauffele as he grinned. 

Schauffele also credited his team and especially his caddie, Austin, for their role in this victory. Even as he walked up to the 18thgreen to a loud ovation, Xander paused and had Austin come up and walk beside him.  Later, his embrace on the 18th was in the final moments of a savoring victory. 

This is what real leadership is about — demonstrating the appreciation and recognition of team members. Sharing the spotlight for recognition as contributing significantly to this victory. Embracing is a sign of connection that is way beyond golfer/caddie. Xander is demonstrating caring, and the high trust between these two allows them to collaborate in ways that result in high performance.

What an amazing example of leadership for each of us to take note of.  Who needs to know we appreciate them?  Who deserves more recognition for what they do?  Who do we need to spend time with to demonstrate caring and respect?  Great questions for us every week regardless of what our title or role is. 

CeCe:  Are you going to watch golf for the next three hours?

Me:  Absolutely, there are seven golfers within a stroke of the lead and four are Americans.

CeCe:  I’m going to run some errands…(aka shopping)
